Welcome to the Faculty Learning Sessions Guide! We are going to spend each session exploring the following topics (as discussed during each Spring 2024 session):
Concerns
- Faculty think student work might be AI-generated, but are not sure how to identify if it is.
- AI is here to stay, it's a tool - how should we address it or embrace it?
- Loss of students' ability/capacity to engage in academic research.
- AI-generated images found online are often mislabeled.
- AI changes how we teach writing.
Questions
- Is it ok to use AI as a shortcut?
- What are the pros and cons of AI? How do we best teach this to our students?
- Should we set guardrails for our students? Require they use specific sources of information?
Ideas
- Model best practices for AI use with students - tell them where you obtained the AI-generated info, how you used or adapted it, and gave appropriate credit for it.
- Have students use Gen AI after comparing a project as a confirmation tool (how does their work compare to what Gen AI produces?).
- Use AU Google account to log in to Gen AI services (Google Gemini, ChatGPT)
- Discuss the value of doing your own work/thinking - the satisfaction that comes with a job well done
- For group work: have students use Google Docs to document minutes of their group meetings/work.
