Working with AI in Research and Writing Assignments

Home

Welcome to the Faculty Learning Sessions Guide! We are going to spend each session exploring the following topics (as discussed during each Spring 2024 session):

Concerns

  • Faculty think student work might be AI-generated, but are not sure how to identify if it is.
  • AI is here to stay, it's a tool - how should we address it or embrace it?
  • Loss of students' ability/capacity to engage in academic research.
  • AI-generated images found online are often mislabeled.
  • AI changes how we teach writing.

Questions

  • Is it ok to use AI as a shortcut?
  • What are the pros and cons of AI? How do we best teach this to our students?
  • Should we set guardrails for our students? Require they use specific sources of information?

Ideas

  • Model best practices for AI use with students - tell them where you obtained the AI-generated info, how you used or adapted it, and gave appropriate credit for it.
  • Have students use Gen AI after comparing a project as a confirmation tool (how does their work compare to what Gen AI produces?).
  • Use AU Google account to log in to Gen AI services (Google Gemini, ChatGPT)
  • Discuss the value of doing your own work/thinking - the satisfaction that comes with a job well done
  • For group work: have students use Google Docs to document minutes of their group meetings/work.
